3. Stories about Golden Star Balm
Story 1 - Golden Star balm (Cao Sao
Vang) – Since 1954
It
is interesting to see that Golden Star balm (Cao Sao Vang), a product usually
associated with the pre-Doi Moi period, has become a smash hit in nearly 20
countries around the world.
This
Vietnamese-made ointment has a special history and can provide a useful example
for the pharmaceutical industry and other businesses in Vietnam.
‘Out
of stock’ and similar phrases are the messages usually displayed on famous
online retailers such as eBay and Amazon, as well as online pharmaceutical
shops in many countries such as the UK, the US and Australia when users search
for Golden Star balm.
Research
and production of this product began post-1954. This small balm tin became
indispensable for many Vietnamese people and one of Vietnam’s key exports to
the former Soviet Union and many countries in Eastern Europe. But after the
Eastern bloc collapsed, Golden Star balm also virtually disappeared, even in
the domestic market.
But
since 2013, this Vietnamese-made cream has been selling like hot cakes in many
countries at a price of around VND 40,000 a tin (USD 2.0/tin), excluding
shipping fees.
The
story of Golden Star balm is nothing particular as more and more companies are
exporting products made of natural ingredients employing traditional Vietnamese
medicine methods.
Story 2 - The History of Vietnam Golden
Star Balm
Vietnam
Golden Star Balm or Cao Sao Vang is a popular medicated balm of Vietnam. It is
very useful for colds, headache, runny nose, flu, dizziness, motion sickness,
rheumatism, migraines, aching joints. The material of the balsam is natural
essential oils derived from eucalyptus, peppermint, clove, cinnamon.
During
the war against France and the years after 1954, Vietnam has the only common
medicated balm, called White Tiger Balm. After 1954, North Vietnam started to
rebuild the health care system. The state-owned pharmaceutical companies have
been encouraged and accelerated the production of medicines from the
traditional medicinal ingredients which are available in the country.
Being
a well-known product, Golden Star Balm was one of the products that have been
researched into mass production. Research and production at that time were not
easy. Until about 1968-1969, after such as long period of research and
development. Golden Star Balm has been produced in large quantity. The product
is considered stable in quality with durability under various weather
conditions, with the trade name in Vietnamese was Cao Sao Vang
After
launching the product, Golden Star Balm was widely used in northern Vietnam.
With the warm effect, many Vietnamese people on business trips to the Eastern
Europe country took along this balm to use or to present as a gift. Hence, the
Golden Star Balm has been known by many Eastern European people.
After
1975, Vietnam and the Soviet Union increased the trading activities. Cao Sao
Vang was one of the famous items exported to the Soviet Union. Every year,
about 10-20 million boxes have been exported.
Unfortunately,
the export period to the Soviet Union has ended, leading the consumption of the
Gold Star Balm decreased. Also, there were many pharmaceutical companies
produce Cao Sao Vang, however, only a few firms keep stable quantity.
Until
the period of 2013-2017, Golden Star Balm is referred to as a good product to
sell on the international B&C or C&C market. It could be found easily
on eBay, Amazon, AliExpress or some of the e-commerce websites.
The few tips on how to use Vietnam
Golden Star Balm
Cao
Sao Vang is very useful for colds, dry cough, hard breath, rheumatism,
migraines, aching joints.
If you have a headache: seasickness
during the trip, you can rub a very small amount of balm below the nose, on
forehead and neck. After using, please clean your hands before touching your
eyes (may burn much).
The hard breath: In the
boiling water, add a bit of balm, and you can make better inhalation when
breathing.
A dry cough: In the case of
no inflammation, use a small amount to rub on the neck and sole of the foot.
Keep warm by socks for a few hours. Try not to use too much and too many times.
Insect Bite: To prevent
insect bites (mosquito, ant...) you can use the small amount to rub on your
hand and your legs. The scent of balm will keep bugs away. If you are stung by
the ant or mosquito, use litter amount to rub on the place which insect bites.
It will relieve you from the itching.
Story 3 - Golden Star and Uses of Camphor
When
I was growing up, we had these fascinating red tins in our medicine cabinet.
Roughly the size of an average coin, when pried open, these tiny containers
exuded a most peculiar scent that you couldn’t get from anything else. Inside
was a thick, slightly yellow substance that mum would put on her temples if she
had a headache, or used it as a chest rub when I had a cold.
This
remedy is known as Golden Star Aromatic Balm, and it comes from Vietnam, where
it is known as Cao Sao Vang. Funny enough it was a popular import in the Soviet
Union and is still widely used across the region, while almost unheard of in
most parts of the Western world. But if you had a whiff, you would instantly recognize
it as a cousin of Vicks, or, if you’ve come across it, the Chinese Tiger Balm.
Different tin, same suspects
They
all have several things in common, most notably camphor and menthol, along with
peppermint oil. But it is camphor in particular which lends its unmistakable
aroma to these remedies. I find the smell irresistible, so much so that simply
sniffing the balm was far more appealing than actually putting it on the skin.
However,
if you are to apply it on the skin, you will experience a tingling sensation
that is both cool and warm at the same time, perhaps a little bit like burning,
but you can never be quite sure how to describe the sensation. And that’s the
whole point. The most famous of camphor balms – Tiger Balm – is marketed as
“temporary pain relief of muscular aches and joint pain.”
How camphor balms work
Camphor
is a natural substance derived from a tree called camphor laurel (Cinnamomic camphor).
Distilled from the wood, it is white and has a waxy texture. It belongs to a
large class of chemicals known as terpenoids. These compounds are diverse and
can be found in all types of living things, but are particularly well recognized
in the plant world, where some of them possess strong aromas – think cinnamon,
clove, eucalyptus, pine sap.
A
balm containing camphor can indeed provide “temporary relief” from muscle
pains, because the chemical works as a ‘counter-irritant’. It actually causes
irritation on the site of application, thus distracting from the pain
elsewhere, such as deeper under the skin where the strained muscle resides. The
principle of the action is much the same as when you bump your knee into
something and rub it to relieve the pain, except with added aromatics and extra
stimulation of heat receptors.
Menthol
and mint oil, two other common ingredients in these types of balms, are also
well-known counter-irritants. A combination of all these, plus a few more
essential oils, such as cinnamon and clove, can provide a truly effective rub,
even if the effects do not last or actually remove the cause of the pain. On
top of being a counter-irritant, camphor is also a mild pain reliever
(analgesic), although the molecular mechanism for this is not well understood.
I
haven’t encountered a tin of Golden Star for ages, but today I purchased Tiger
Balm, which is produced in Singapore and readily available in Australia. The
two remedies share a majority of ingredients, so they share a true likeness in
aroma, too.
There
is something about the smell of camphor that I just find deeply satisfying, so
I’m quickly getting into the habit of unscrewing the jar, sniffing it, and
putting it away again. Addictive. Once I have a sore muscle somewhere, I’ll
probably try it out, too.
Story 4 – The best selling in Eastern
Europe
Unexpectedly,
the yellow oil box, which sold only $1 in the north before the unification of
the country, was the first (and apparently only) pharmaceutical product to
export strongly in the market, Eastern Europe. There are up to several tens of
millions of boxes.
Around
1969, the Central Pharmaceutical Factory 3 has researched and successfully
built high oil boxes named Yellow or Golden Star. High Gold Star Oil is still
packed in a reddish, iron-like box of high oil imported from the center with a
five-pointed golden star. It is only different from high oil "Tigers"
in that it seems less aromatic only. Usability is not different.
These
familiar items are present in all families. The cadre went on business trips
and in the back-pack he went to the trips. The iron box made by Vietnam itself
was rough at the time, hard to open. Adults teach children to open by dropping
it on the floor several times. The oil in the box is also thicker than imported
oil. Long lasting and safer when it is hot.
In
past time, the medicine is extremely shortage, high oil yellow box used to
treat quite a lot of diseases and unexpected effect. From headache, runny nose,
cough, to coughs, bruises, bruises, mosquito bites and abdominal pain when
symptoms are difficult to digest. Indeed, high oil is in many cases just
psychological therapy without the scientific basis of the treatment. But
psychotherapy has long been recognized by medicine.
In
emergencies if you can not get to the market, you can still use it for normal
use. Foresters can also use it to fight mosquitoes, squeezing very effective.
Golden Star Oil Box was once a gift to young ladies. The soldier kept it in his
backpack on mission. Memories of such passionate taste are often used very
carefully only for themselves. Siblings who study abroad can also buy high
quality Star Gold as a gift or a resale. Tropical people to the West cold
weather can not be missing the high oil yellow box anti-cold.
